YSlow 0.9.3 Release with Firefox 3 Support

YSlow, the performance lint tool created by the Yahoo! Exceptional Performance team was updated to version 0.9.3. today. This minor version increment contains:
,

  • Firefox 3 support (up to and including 3.0b4pre)
  • Sortable table of page components in the Components tab
  • Beacons (1x1 images that are not part of the DOM) excluded from the overall score. If you want them back in the score, use about:config to set the option extensions.firebug.yslow.excludeBeaconsFromLint to false
  • Minor bug fixes that caused YSlow to freeze as it peels off the page components (encountering streams, applets, empty URLs)

In the spirit of openness and our commitment to a faster experience on the web, we hope you join us in accelerating the user experience.

You can download the tool here, report bugs here, read the performance rules, and participate in the performance mailing list discussions. Also make sure you keep an eye on our performance-related postings on YDN and YUI Blog.

Too bad the scores have shifted because of the beacon issue (my home page just gained 4 points, from 78 to 82.) There were a few sites that I just couldn't get scores on when I did the YSlow Performance Grades for 200 Top Web Sites survey last month. That 4th bullet fixes the issue (at least with Ancestry.com, one of the sites that failed before,) it's just skews the data since there are basically two scales at play now, so I'm hesitant to add in the missing data. Oh well.

Of course I could just read more clearly and see that there's an option to include the beacons which will level the playing field... *doh*

Rob, thanks for the interesting stats you have there (I searched for "YSlow Performance Grades for 200 Top Web Sites"). Good news is that the three sites that failed with the previous YSlow version before are now working. Sadly there's a lot of Fs, but that's why there's YSlow - to raise awareness that there's a problem and to suggest steps in the right direction.

Same bug (couldn't get firefox work until yslow was disabled.) with Firefox 2.0.0.12
Please fix it !

YSlow is not working. It appears in firebug, but nothing happend.

Posted by: macx at February 15, 2008 8:26 AM

Yup, with the latest yslow enabled, I could not load any pages, and restarting would not bring up the last session. I couldn't even load anything from bookmarks and my home page would not come up. Overall...broke firefox.

I believe there's some sort of conflict with the Tab Mix Plus extension.

Do you have this extension installed? If disable it and enable YSlow is everything back to normal?

I'll look into the conflict with Tab Mix Plus and update accordingly.

Thanks,
Stoyan

Yes, that's it.

In my case, it's YSlow that gets disabled. :)

"Sadly there's a lot of Fs, but that's why there's YSlow - to raise awareness that there's a problem and to suggest steps in the right direction."

Yeah, the numbers were pretty rough ( http://tinyurl.com/3e46oo if anyone is curious. posting a link didn't quite work the first time.) Lots of Fs and only a select few that even got into the B or better range.

Yslow 0.9.4 isn't working for me with Firefox 3.0b3 and firebug 1.1.0b12. I just get blank tabs. Anyone experiencing the same?

Posted by: Pepijn at March 3, 2008 4:25 AM

YSlow 0.9.4 with Firebug 1.05 on Firefox 2.0.0.12 on OSX 10.4 is reporting as note compatible. /shrug

does not work with FF 3b4 on mac osx

Posted by: Keonne at March 21, 2008 8:52 AM

Confirming Chris Nolan's observation: this add-on says it's incompatible on Firefox 3b4 on OS X.

Posted by: Bill Burcham at March 27, 2008 2:05 PM

Also incompatible with just released FF3b5 - any ETA on either a correction for the OSX FF3b4, or support for FF3b5?

YSlow is compatible with FF3 betas. An update compatible with the RC1 is coming soon.

Posted by: Stoyan at June 2, 2008 3:05 PM

Firefox RC2 is out now too, will this update be compatible with RC2 as well?

Posted by: Steve at June 8, 2008 1:21 PM

RC3 is out, with the final version being released on Tuesday. Still no YSlow.
