Fractious Friday: More thinky bits from my trawl of the nets

Some of the things I made time to read this past week:

I started with danah boyd's Web 2.0 Expo talk titled Streams of Content, Limited Attention: The Flow of Information through Social Media, about what it means to live and pay attention in a decentralized networked culture, in contrast to a broadcast culture of limited channels.

(Worth noting, I arrived at danah's paper via a post she'd written about her own experience of public speaking gone awry, when the madness of the back channel drowned the possibility of compassion from the crowd.)

Kevin Marks's response is a highbrow vocabulary for the networked stream Danah had described: Publics, Flow, Phatic, Tummeling and Out-groups - New Words You Need to Know to Understand the Web.

Also in New York, Fred Wilson's Presentations vs Discussions and Matt Blumberg's Powerpointless reference the same board meeting, where focused attention, and right preparation set flow in motion.

From his blog on Edge Economics for the Harvard Business School, Umair Haque brings us into the future with lightsaber keen insights. In a post called Why Big Media's Anti-Google Counter-Revolution Will Fail, he reflects on the dialectic of revolution and empire.

Finally, a nod to something a little closer to home: Serendipity and O'Reilly, about how Tim O'Reilly's influential twitter stream leads the Fleeting Thoughts blogger to several wonderful O'Reilly volumes about design patterns and best practices on the social web: Web 2.0 Architectures, and two from Yahoo Press, Designing Social Interfaces and Building Web 2.0 Reputation Systems.
