The Business of Open Source

For many years, free and open source software was exclusively associated with the research community, in contrast to the closed source products developed by commercial software vendors. Yahoo! recently invited Tom Wasserman to give a keynote talk that describes the emergence of open source business, focusing on the growing commercialization of open source and offers some predictions for future directions related to the business of open source.

Experts @ Work: David Ciemiewicz (aka Ciemo) on Pig and Hadoop

What exactly is a "Search Excellence Guru"? Jeremy Zawodny sits down with David Ciemiewicz (aka Ciemo) to find out.

Highlights from the conversation include Ciemo’s thoughts on how to use Pig and Hadoop to sift through petabytes of user logs to gain an understanding of user wants, needs, and desires; why he likes Pig Latin more than SQL; and why the map-reduce compute grid paradigm makes a great alternative to traditional databases such Oracle and MySQL, data warehouses and data marts.

Announcing the MyBlogLog API

Yahoo!'s Ian Kennedy explains some of the capabilities of the new MyBlogLog API at the Graphing Social Patterns conference in San Diego. Developers can leverage the identities people share via MyBlogLog to create new forms of communities via the methods now exposed publicly. He walked through a few examples, including Kent Brewster's 'Blog Juice' bookmarklet, Raven's embedded social network and its WordPress plug-in, and a new hack that can surface the activity of people you encounter in physical space via a bluetooth client.

Experts @ Work : Richard Crowley - Flickr Uploadr

The new Flickr Uploadr has been built from scratch to work on Windows and Mac OSX. Before you upload you can add titles, tags and descriptions, add photos to sets and reorder your photos from Uploadr. This new Uploadr is an open source project, too, so you can download it and have a look at how it works. We sat down with Richard Crowley whose was behind the newest release of the Flickr Uploadr:

Screencast: WordPress Plug-In Demo

Jeremy Zawodny got a WordPress plug-in demo from CrowdFavorite.com co-founder Alex King. Crowd Favorite offers web-based task management software in packages to fit just about everyone.

The recently released Yahoo! Shortcuts WordPress Plug-In acts like a blogging assistant, scanning your post for interesting things it can link to, photos to include, maps to embed, and more. And it does this using many of our APIs (Maps, Flickr, Search, etc.). With just a simple mouse click, you can include the material in your post and get on with life.

UED: Pattern Library w/ Christian Crumlish

Recently, Christian Crumlish, the curator of Yahoo!'s design pattern library, gave a User Experience Design (UED) brown bag talk here at Yahoo! called "The Design Pattern Library Wants YOU!" updating folks on our recent developments, our current processes, and how they can get involved. He talked about both our internal pattern library and the open one hosted on the Developer Network

Because Christian hears a lot of requests on mailing lists and blogs from designers and developers at conferences who are curious about how the pattern library has evolved since Yahoo! first launched it and how we manage the pattern development and publishing process, we're pleased to be able to share this talk as part of YDN Theater with just a very few sensitive topics omitted.

MashUp Camp -- Dublin

On November 10-12th, people descended onto Dublin, Ireland for MashUp Camp.
The 9 gets hacked to 11!!!!

"Bangalore. Berkeley. Boston. London. Palo Alto. Dundee. Manila. Pasadena. Pittsburgh. Sunnyvale. Champaign-Urbana. Seoul."

Words to a song by the immortal Johnny Cash? Nope. Stops on Beck's next world tour? Hardly. Places you can get a really great cup of espresso? You're getting warmer. What do all these places have in common? We've gone there for Hack Day.

Here with the scoop from Bangalore is our own Maria Sansone, taking the 9 to 11, just this once....

Over the last couple of years we've been struck by lightning, hacked by naughty puppets, and overwhelmed at every turn by the sheer ingenuity of our participants. We've seen a ton of hacks, from the sublime to the ridiculous, but we're pretty sure we haven't seen them all. So keep an eye on hackday.org and the University Hack Day page ... your turn to play will come.

That's what we want you to do at University Hack Day: grab our stuff and mash it up. We'll bring Maps, Search, Answers, Flickr, Music, del.icio.us, and all the rest of Yahoo's properties, documentation from the Yahoo!
