Music Business - Cash in on the Big Show

Summer is prime time for large musical festivals. Every genre and crowd has their own music business in all major festivals. Between musicians, fans, and press the event can be a practical who is who of any given scene.

I know that we all have been at a show or festival and been handed a flyer to another show. I typically find this action annoying, but that is because the presentation of the person handing out the flyer.

A good example of memorable grassroots promotion comes from Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. In the documentary DiG! Anton is shown outside a CMJ music business showcase wearing roller blades, all white, alien goggle glasses, and a fur cap passing out free LPs for industry people to listen to.

The point is to be seen by as many people as possible in hopes of sticking with a few observers.

Regards,
Bo Lorrie.
Thanks to Trackbuzzer.
http://www.trackbuzzer.com

Get a Record Deal - CD Manufacturing and Distribution

It is going to take a lot longer in the real world to get your PMCD (Pre-Mastered CD) done to Redbook audio specs (44.1 kHz, 16-bit) than it took to read about it in this series of articles.

The first thing you need to decide is how far you want to go on packaging, seeing as how this is a three-song demo. You can make it look like a retail CD release — with four-color folding booklet in the front of the jewel case, a color insert inside the back, a couple of colors (even full color) on the CD itself.

If you are not already reading EQ, Recording, Mix tape, Future Music, and/or other music trade magazines, well, you should be. There are tons of different CD plants and manufacturers; check their websites for up-to-date information, and while you are online go ahead and Google up some more.

Regards,
Noemi Goebel.
Thanks to trackbuzzer.
http://www.trackbuzzer.com

Music promotion is guerilla warfare. Doing whatever is necessary to get noticed. For any war campaign a healthy arsenal is needed. In the case of music the arsenal would be CDs. Once you have amassed your arms get ready to unleash on the head honchos, the leaders of the music industry.

Make a list of artists and labels you respect. Cross of any large major label independent artists or labels such as Virgin or Bono. Stick to the little fish, it is easier to get a bite. In the email blast services compliment the independent artist and say how much you admire their work and contributions to music consultant.

Next mention your demo and ask if it would be alright to send one to them. Do not make it sound like you are trying to get signed, because most will be turned off by that goal.

Not only will you be surprised by the amount of people who reply to your emails, but also by the amount of interest in hearing what you have to show.

Regards,
Ashly Guercio.
Thanks to Trackbuzzer.
http://www.trackbuzzer.com

YQL + Music

http://ymusicblog.com/blog/2009/04/29/easy...ta-through-yql/

Hey all,

We’ve been working with our friends at Yahoo! Developer Network to make accessing the Music API simpler and easier to use with other services. We’re happy to announce the availability of our Music services within the Yahoo! Query Language environment (YQL).

The YQL platform provides a single endpoint service that enables developers to query, filter and combine data across Yahoo! and the rest of the Web. YQL exposes a SQL-like SELECT syntax that is both familiar to developers and expressive enough for getting the right data. For example, you can search for an artist to use in mashups with other services (warning, small bits of tech speak ahead):

select * from music.artist.search where keyword=”Coldplay”;

If you head over to the YQL Console, click on the data tables module in the right panel, you can begin to play around with the available music tables. You can even create your own tables to share with the larger community.

Many other cool things in the latest release of YQL. You can find out all the juicy details on the YQL team blog.

Enjoy, and let us know what you think.

Thanks,

Stephen Garcia

Yahoo! Music

Music API Feedback

Here is some general feedback about the API.

Why are there never arrays of length 1 when the result is JSON. This is just really irritating to worry about in the code because if makes for additional lines of code because the output might be formatted differently.

I wish I could turn off the "Next" and "Previous" buttons on the player. They don't actually function as I expect either. I would really like to have a chromeless player, similar to the youtube one, where I have all the javascript hooks to preform the functions that happen normally in the player. Also I wish I could seek in a video. The mouse turns to a hand over the seek bar but it doesn't do anything which is very confusing. I would really like a lot more JavaScript control.

Documentation needs work. A lot of it seems to be missing information or has extra data one cannot access. One great example is the Video Player Events example lists more pType cases then are actually displayed in the documentation. Also I don't think you ever explain what the pItem object looks like. I think there is a lot of documentation missing there. You guys never put that you need appid as one of the arguments which was confusing the first time I was trying things. I would love it if your example actually worked too. Some of the other api use appid=YahooDemo to give working examples that only work for special cases. This has just made is easy to learn how to use the api.

Advertisements between videos is painful when developing. When I develop I refresh and send lots of information to the player and I have to keep waiting for the advertisements to play and finish, which is just really irritating. I would love to get revenue share for the advertisements too. I would be much more inclined to use Yahoo music over other music video sites if I could get revenue share from the advertisements that show no matter what.

I would love to hear your thoughts on some of my comments and questions, and if you would like to ask me more question please don't hesitate to ask.
Thank you
Greg
gregthebusker [at] yahoo [dot] com

This is my first post: I've been listening to a launchcast station of mine for a while now, and I think it would be interesting to take a yahoo music station and build a Java applet, that would basically be a new player, but one in which I could modify the buttons/controls and how the music image is displayed, etc.

Is it possible, using the Music API, to build an applet like this?
I'm currently building a Windows-based program that is used to tag all sort of media files. MP3s, videos, and DRM-enabled tracks.

The thing is, when you download those files -- be it legally or not, but let's pretend the end-users are all good people -- they don't often come with complete tags. Any song could have tags giving various informations about it, like composer, copyrights, BPM, album cover, and so on. For example, the ID3v2 tags provide a way to tell the terms of use of the tagged file. But that's only an example.

My app would allow one to tag their files to a very deep degree of detail, but would primarily be used by end-users who see many non-tagged files from the net and would like to tag them appropriately.

My app will at least access Discogs, Last.fm and MusicBrainz to retrieve/guess information about a specific track. I though it could come handy to add Yahoo! to the possible list of data gathering sources...

But apparently, it sounds from the API key generation page that it's only possible to connect websites to the data.
I've noticed that about 50% of the time autoplay doesn't start the player. The player sits with the blue rotating circle icon in the center forever. If the user clicks the play icon once or twice then the video starts. Anyone else see this?
