I am just getting started with using the LocalSearch API for yahoo (http://local.yahooapis.com/LocalSearchService/V3/localSearch?appid=) and I'm having trouble finding a list of the valid Category IDs Yahoo uses. If someone can point me in the right direction that would be most appreciated! Thanks

Hi,

I'm using the news api to retrieve news from specific sources and I found (what I believe is) a bug.

I'm looking for news on topic 'CNN' from the www.cnn.com web site.
some of the results return valid cnn links, but in the source and sourceurl fields i get http://www.wsbtv.com/ as a result, which dosen't makes sense to me.

When signing up Application Domains forces http

I'm having trouble generating an OAuth key. When I enter "Application Domain" https://secure.backupify.com and click Generate API Key, it goes to the next page, and then I see it has modified the URL to (non-SSL) http://.

Due to the nature of our site, we force our users to use https with a mod_rewrite rule and do not allow any non-https traffic.
Any ideas on how I can register this, without changing production?

(I had no trouble registering a development sandbox using just http)

Summer is prime time for large musical festivals. Every genre and crowd has their own music business in all major festivals. Between musicians, fans, and press the event can be a practical who is who of any given scene.

I know that we all have been at a show or festival and been handed a flyer to another show. I typically find this action annoying, but that is because the presentation of the person handing out the flyer.

A good example of memorable grassroots promotion comes from Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. In the documentary DiG! Anton is shown outside a CMJ music business showcase wearing roller blades, all white, alien goggle glasses, and a fur cap passing out free LPs for industry people to listen to.

The point is to be seen by as many people as possible in hopes of sticking with a few observers.

Many people like enjoy movies at home and they have piles of DVDs. So do I. I like watch

lastest movie on my new Mac and it is wonderful. However, I always break and lose my DVDs

and I was really sad because they cost most of my money. Luckily, I find a way to store my

DVD movies on my new Mac computer and evern put it on my iPod because I use a DVD Ripper for

Mac and it can rip DVDs to so many video formats, such as AVI, MP4, MOV, MKV, WMV, DivX,

XviD, MPEG-1/2, 3GP, 3G2, VOB and so on.

To do this you must have a nice dvd ripper for Mac. So I find Aiseesoft

DVD Ripper for Mac

OK, let’s do it.
Step 1. Download and install Aisesoft DVD Ripper for Mac.
For Intel Click Here
For Power PC Click Here

Step 2. Load you DVD.
Click the “Load DVD” button(a), find the DVD folder of the movie you want to add from your

DVD-ROM, and Click “Open”.

Tick the check boxes( before the titles and chapters that you want to rip.

Step 3. Chose output profile and settings.
Selecting output format is really easy, you can chose your output format according to your

devices players and the default setting works great.

For a veteran of digital player, you could customize your own settings by clicking

“Settings” button to chose your own video resolution, frame rate, bit rate, encoder, etc.

Tips: Sample rate (Hz) = any value up to 48000 (higher value = better sound quality =

bigger file)
Bitrate (kbps) = any value up to 160 (higher value = better sound quality = bigger

file)

After setting your own output and settings you can click “Start” button to start your

conversion. (The time of the conversion depends on your DVD and the settings you chose.)

Do a few more clicks to make your movie more enjoyable.
1. Trim
If you want to rip only a part of the DVD movie, please click “Trim” button and drag the

“Start trim slider” to set the start time and “End trim slider” to set the end time.(a).

You can also do that by clicking the “Start trim button” and “End trim button”(. The

third way you do that is set the exact Start/End time at the right of the pop-up window and

click “OK”.

2. Crop
If you want to remove the black edges or you want to rip a certain area of your video,

please click the “Crop” button. You can do this either by drag the frame around the movie

(a) or set the crop value: “Top, Left, Bottom, Right”.(. Another way to do that is

choose mode from “Crop Mode”©.
Aiseesoft DVD Ripper for Mac also allows you to choose the output aspect ratio above the

crop pane, “Keep Original, full screen, 16:9 and 4:3” are available.

3. Effect
If you want to adjust the effect of your movie, please click the “Effect” button and a

pop-up effect window will appear. It allows you to edit your movie’s effect including

“Brightness, Contrast, Hue, Saturation and Volume”

4. Merge into one file/audio track/subtitles
If you would like to put several titles and chapters into one output file, please tick the

check box of the “Merge into one file”.
You can choose audio track and subtitles you like according to what you prefer and the DVD

supports.

Follow what I said above I hope you could enjoy your DVD movies on your Mac and also on

your iPod and other portable players.

I had proposed the YUI treeview for commercial web application to a client, citing the BSD license. But the client quoted the "Terms of Use" link on the YUI licensing page (http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/license.html) and refused to accept the conditions of the terms of use, such as attribution policy, Yahoo's right to charge the client etc. I had assumed that the BSD license was quite liberal when it came to commercial use and that the Yahoo Terms of Use was meant for other Yahoo APIs and Web Services. Now the link in the YUI licensing page got me really confused. Have any developers dealt with this issue? Can someone from Yahoo send me an official clarification?

Is this what you mean by attribution policy, "Neither the name of Yahoo! Inc. nor the names of its contributors may be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without specific prior written permission of Yahoo! Inc."? Yes, I think it is fair to ask you not to claim Yahoo's endorsement or promotion for your work, and it seems ridiculous that a client would have a problem with that. Or if you mean the requirement to acknowledge the copyright existing in YUI code, that is also fair. I do not see any reference to "Yahoo's right to charge the client" in the license. This is a typical 3-clause BSD license, and it is very commercial-use friendly. Source code covered by similar variations on the BSD license are used in a lot of commercial software, including Microsoft Windows. If your client has a problem with the disclaimer, you can inform them that they can provide their own guarantees on the combination of the YUI and their own code, but they can't expect Yahoo to guarantee an unknown combination of your client's code and Yahoo's.

Of course, if this license is too burdensome, YUI may not be right for you and your client.

excluding sites from image search

The web search allows you to exclude sites (-site:somedomain.com) from the results but image search does not do so. Is there a way around this? Will this ability be made available any time soon?

Also, is there any intention to exclude adult images from the image search results? It is stated in the documentation that adult content is excluded by default but that does not seem to be the case.

Why do I get a different video every time I click to watch something?

Yahoo, please fix this error!!!! Every time I click to see your news video I end up with another video playing, even though the title is still showing the same subject in the bottom of the player! but now I am confused, how would I get oauth_verifier. Once I click on complete button on yahoo login, I go get another window with www.site.com/oauth_token=ewvee2n&oauth_verifier=hqjqyh. But I dont know, how can I capture that response in my javascript.

Can you use document.location to get at the url?

Be sure you're setting the OAuth callback_url correctly too, so the OAuth provider can send the verifier back to the file containing your JavaScript.

Alpha Channel in PNG images

Having read your extensive and very helpful guidelines on load-time optimization, there is one thing I found notably absent. Many graphics programs export RGB-alpha PNG files by default. Since many of us still avoid alpha transparency in PNG's like the plague due to improper rendering in IE6, I think you'd find a vast majority of PNG's on sites out there do not need their alpha channels at all. Your advice on using pngcrush for optimization was somewhat helpful, but by far the best optimization I get with PNG's is to remove the redundant alpha channel - saving a much larger percentage of the file size than any of the other optimizations you recommended. Obviously this technique is not an option whenever transparency is desired, but in my designs at least, this is a rare thing.

Am I missing something here, or was this a notable oversight on your part?

Hi,

I'm having issues verifying www.5ftshelf.com as an OAuth application. I have tried several times throughout the day and with several different file names. In all cases have verified the file is reachable in both the browser and with a wget. The error message I get when hitting the problem is:

"There was an internal error while an application is being created. Please try again."

If I remove the file I get a different error about not being able to get the file, so clearly the Yahoo servers are seeing the file. As per the instructions the file created is empty but googling around I noticed other people have had their oauth token in the file. This is not possible for me as I haven't been told the token at this point.

I am able to create a desktop app oauth key/secret but cannot use this to make requests from 5ftshelf.com presumably?

I've heard of issues w/ subdomains containing a leading numeric character, so I suspect the problem is not on your side. I'll report your experience to the folks investigating this. The only workaround I can recommend for now is to use a domain or subdomain w/ a leading alpha char, eg example.com or sub.example.com

I have been trying to get the contact list of an user. As mentioned in the document, http://social.yahooapis.com/v1/user/{guid}/contacts returns first 10 contacts by default. this works fine for me.

But when I add count matrix parameter it doesn't work. it gives me 401 signature_invalid. In-fact, it doesn't work with any matrix parameter.

I am using QOAuth library in Qt 4.5.3.

Yahoo weather XML parsing problems when forecasting C#

I've currently written an XML parser to pull the yahoo weather into an intraweb application I'm developing for the company I work for. Weather effects what we do so I thought it would be a good idea to do this. My problems is when I try and pull this in, everything works fine. The 5-Day forecasting on the other hand does not. I'm only able to pull the very next day, and nothing further past that. Any idea what the problem can be. I know that it's on a 0 sum and the [0] attitude pulls current day, then [1] pulls the next day. But for some reason [2] and so are do not pull in advance I keep getting that it's not a reference to an object.

I am a J2ME developer I am new to YDN and I am using chartapi.finance.yahoo.com to calculate and display chart.
My questions is how to convert TIMESTAMP value to a Java Date or Calendar Object ?.....

But unfortunatly cal value is set to 15/Jan/1970 15:26:47.

you must pass publisher's accountID via ID field instead of 'SelfManagedPublisher'.

More over, if you set deliveryMode as 'Impressions' then you need to pass impressionGoal value.

P.S. I have a problem with addPlacement too. Please, take a look at my post http://developer.yahoo.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=4337. May be you know how to get some network ID (or publisher ID) to set a placement.

Can you please provide the details that you are adding in for your application please? Title, description, app / domain urls, favicon url, etc. would be great.

In general, apps cannot:
- Be ip addresses
- Have custom ports
- Be private (all domains must be publicly accessible)
- Use the terms Yahoo or Y! in the title or description

Cannot register OAuth project on non-standard port

I want to register a dev version of my project on a webserver not on port 80 (8888 in fact). But this port is stripped out, initially at least when setting up the "confirmation" empty html page.

In theory I could temporarily assign my app to port 80, but not permanently (it's actually my router admin page), and I suspect the OAuth stuff needs a permanent base URL.

Anyone got any ideas?

Search.suggest lacks field names

The sample query:

select * from search.suggest where query="madonna"

produces a plain array in query.results.Result, not an array of named elements, no field names at all. Since the returned fields are unnamed, there is no way to sort them or do any operation since there is no way to refer to them.

Actually, any reply that has just one field in the reply returns no field names. So, the structure of the reply changes depending on whether you are asking one field or many. This lack of consistency in the reply makes it harder to use as a generic tool. If you provide your users with a series of checkboxes to select which fields to pick, when the number of fields selected goes down to 1, your processing turns out different than when there is more than one? That is not good

Yahoo! Site Explorer seems to have problems. I need to update Yahoo! desparately. My position in index has gone down since new pages are not indexed.

1) Unable to Resubmit a sitefeed :
I get "Invalid Request" message

I even tried deleting & submiting my sitemap.

I have been looking and trying lot of stuff just to find how to utilize Yaoo APT service to cater ads on sites. Basically, based on criteria, i want to show related ads on my site.

Initially it seemed, using Advertiser account will do, but i got stuck with placement service. After some reading, it looked, i should be using Publisher service but its just getting confusing with out reaching at any conclusion.

I'm trying to build a pipe and I'm stuck with a YQL issue. I need a query like this:

The query runs fine when some_text contains just ascii characters. But it returns null results --which is wrong-- when some_text contain non ascii characters, like extended latin characters, or Greek characters which is what I need to use it with. The page where the query runs on at some_url has a utf-8 encoding and shows up just fine.

I've set up a test file at http://mytests.atwebpages.com/test2.html duplicating the structure of the source page I'm working with.

This query returns 2 items as expected:

The following two return null, whereas they should return 1 item each:

Hi Jeffery, that option is available on the calendar system. If you select the repeat option for "weekly", you can enter the weekly repeat number. If you set it to 2 the event will repeat every 2 weeks.

YUI Grid resizing help

Hi,

I am using a special nesting grid yui-gf which splits a grid into proportions of 25% to 75%.
I currently have a grid which is set up as yui-gf (1:3).
I have a button which resizes the grid to 100% on one of the panels.
I use a javascript function to handle this resizing by using a Dom.setStyle method and setting width of the displayed grid to 100%.
So far this works as intended.

The trouble I am having is when I try to revert back to the original proportions. The dom.setStyle expects that I set the proportions back and I do not like setting the proportions when they were previously defaulted to the yui-gf. At the moment I am using a setting
dom.setStyle("divName","width", "34.6%")
dom.setStyle("divName","width", "64.6%")
Hard coding these values means the grid does not resize very well when a slider bar is used in an adjacent grid.

Can anyone tell me if there is a better way to resize the grids from yui-gf to one full grid and back again without having to hardcode percentages in?
The YUI grid builder example is exactly what I am looking to do but I cannot find the source code for it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Unfortunately we don't currently have any C# code available within our samples. The best thing that I could suggest to build out the OAuth flow and make requests to our systems would be to look at the OpenSocial REST API for C# at http://code.google.com/p/opensocial-net-client/ . Since we support those libraries you could look through the code and see what is required to make an authenticated request to our servers.

I am developing a commercial shopping website and I am using Yahoo Shopping API as well as CNET Review API. As you know, we get XML or JSON data after hitting Yahoo server for particular product query.
Actually i want to store that XML data into my local MYSQL database and then i want to display all information to my users.
I don't want to hit yahoo server directly from my application/code and display data to my user.

Can we store The XML Data in my local database? Is it allowable from YAhoo term and condition.

If I've ever seen a more blatant backing of one parties agenda and not the other, it's here on yahoo. All I see is obama this, obama that, obama, obama, obama. Well don't you people realize yet that the country is CENTER RIGHT when it comes to politics, so that puts a LOT of us at ODDS with obama? As far as I know the charts component is not part of the developer API at http://developer.yahoo.com/finance/ so I don't have any information on integrating it I'm afraid.
