Off-site access restriction from on-site PHP

Hi Guys,
I am TRYING to access an external web server from my Yahoo hosted PHP script. I know the script is valid as I can easily run it from my localhost. But when I copy the script to my site hosted on Yahoo, the script fails, and I know it fails; whenever the file or file_get_contents PHP function is used. For example, $array = file('www.yahoo.com'); or $string = file_get_contents("www.google.com"); (Yahoo & Google are here only for example). I really get the feeling that there is a permissioning issue on my/all (?) Yahoo hosted sites. Or is it a Yahoo firewall? This is really concerning me as I want to access important information hosted on an external (from Yahoo) site. This is a real show stopper.

Urgent answer required (trex_4321 at yahoo dot com), if possible.
PHP Currency conversion using yahoo finance

Ok, I have some code that was working a few days ago on my family website and now it is not. This is our primary means of support and I need answers as fast as possible. I really appreciate any answer you can give me. I am wondering if something is wrong on Yahoo's end or if they have changed the site in some way. What I am trying to do is pull a currency rate into my website, so that I can change the currency on the site to a currency of choice at the current rate.

This is the code I have been using, does anyone have any information why it is not working now?

<?php
$from2   = 'USD'; //US Dollar
$to2     = 'AUD'; //to Australian Dollar
$url2 = 'http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?e=.csv&f=sl1d1t1&s='. $from2 . $to2 .'=X';
$handle2 = @fopen($url2, 'r');
if ($handle2)
{
$result2 = fgets($handle2, 4096);
fclose($handle2);
}
$audex = explode(',',$result2);
$aussie = $audex[1];
?>

I don't understand it, I have not made any changes to the site on the page that is pulling this in and it was working a few days ago. Now nothing is coming through. Has Yahoo made a change to their system. I read about a new currency converter on this site, do I need to rewrite this code now to get information from that currency converter. Please help ASAP, without this site my family has no income.

Thanks

John R Manning

Dear Svetlana,
unfortunately there's nothing you can do on your user side as only hosting provider can change PHP version. In this case to upgrade from PHP4 to PHP5. I had the same issue - many Open Source PHP applications require PHP 5 to work properly, I sent multiple e-mails to Yahoo! hosting service representative regarding when they plan to upgrade to PHP5 or to offer both PHP4 and PHP5 (some hosting providers do that) but didn't receive any feedback.

I would advise you to choose middle sized hosting provider as they offer better customer service and have the most recent stable PHP, MySQL etc. versions.

Take care,
Maris

FYI, if you are going to be in NY next week, drop by and see Tom talk on Latency at the monthly New York PHP Meetup.

Mobile Data: How to Avoid the Latency Trap When Using Web Services
Optimizing Performance and Minimizing Latency for Mobile PHP Usability
As a pre-cursor to the Yahoo! Open Hack Day, we're pleased to have a special presentation from YDN Senior Developer, Tom Hughes-Croucher
.

NOTE: RSVP is not required but please arrive early to reserve a seat.

Why is mobile different to desktop? When it comes to data there are lots of difference such as processing and most importantly data transmission. Our goal as developers should always be to make the fastest apps possible, however mobile adds a lot of constraints to the platforms we are used to developing for on the desktop. This talk will focus how you can avoid the problems that network latency creates by being smart with your server implementation.

Tom Hughes-Croucher is an Evangelist and Senior Developer in Yahoo's Open Strategy Group, focusing on Yahoos Web Services and Cloud Platform. Tom has contributed to a number of Web standards for the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the British Standards Institute (BSI). Previously he helped build the online music stores for some of the UK's largest brands including Tesco, Three Telecom and Channel 4.

Date:  October 8th, 2009 at 6:30PM (sharp)
Location:  Suspender's Restaurant, 111 Broadway
Post-Meeting: Stick around for food and drink at Suspender's Restaurant

Hi Bob,

It looks like the issue might indeed be with your server configuration. What is probably happening is that your mail server is refusing to relay e-mails from an e-mail address that does not exist on your server.

Try changing your _send_mail function to the following and see if this works. I'm stripping out the header information which should allow the server to use the default send mail address:

CODE

function _send_mail($mailto, $contact_form_title, $subject, $message) {
if (mail($mailto, $subject, $message)) {
echo 'sent=OK&dum=nimic';
} else {
echo 'sent=ER&dum=nimic';
}
}

Let me know if that helps.

Jonathan LeBlanc
Technology Evangelist
Yahoo!
Hi Chinmay,

I would recommend turning on error reporting within PHP - it gives you quite a lot of information about errors you are seeing. Add these two lines of PHP to the top of the scripts:

CODE

error_reporting(E_ALL);
ini_set("display_errors", 1);

I did that and ran your script and immediately saw the following notice:

CODE

Notice: Undefined variable: stock in test.php on line 5

That will help you to debug your application.

Jonathan LeBlanc
Senior Software Engineer
Yahoo!
Hey,
I feel like I've been looking high and low for an answer to a very simple question. So, maybe someone here could help me out. Back when I started doing web design 8 or 10 years ago, we used Dynamic PHP includes. These were fantastic for small business/personal websites. The problem is that I am still using these today. I also have a growing number people asking me to design web sites for them, and less and less time for maintaining the growing sites already using this scheme. I have considered content management systems, but you loose so much control (my outsiders perspective).

So, what do you use?

For instance - using a user id from the XML you provided I made the following request for the user GUID: http://developer.yahoo.com/yql/console/?q=...7footynutguy%27

The REST request is provided in the console and all you will need to do is make that call in a cURL request.

Jonathan LeBlanc
Technology Evangelist
Yahoo!
