Wrong placenames in Belgium

Dear Yahoo!

I wrote you about this before and you replied you would look into it but I haven't heard anything since.

First of all there is a little typo in the town Heverlee in Belgium. Yahoo! Placemaker, Flickr and Upcomming (I assume it's the same database underneath) all think it's Heverle (with a single 'e' at the end). This is wrong, the town's name is Heverlee. Could you please correct this?

Secondly there is the mismatch with 2 other cities. Leuven (another city in Belgium) is always shown as Louvain-la-neuve. I know, they sound similar and I can understand the confusion but these are 2 different cities (in a different province, with different languages). All my geotagged foto's in Flickr show op as "Louvain-la-neuve" while they are taken in Leuven. Again, this is wrong in all the other Yahoo! services as well (checked in upcoming and Flickr).

Could anyone please fix these? Seems like a small fix to me but would help a few 10000 people living in these areas.

Thanks!

500 errors on news sites?

The most likely problem is that these websites use ISO 8859-1 encoded for text and sometimes include non-ASCII characters (such as the symbol for the British Pound). Placemaker currently only works with UTF-8 encoded characters (though we are looking to fix this in a future release), so these characters cause Placemaker to reject the document. Until Placemaker supports ISO 8859-1, you will need to proxy such documents and transcode the text from ISO 8859-1 to UTF-8.

Eddie Babcock
Yahoo!
limit scope of output to countries only

I'm unclear whether you want to locate only countries mentioned in the text, determine the country for each matched location, or assign the text to a single country. I'll try to answer all three questions.

If you want to locate just mentioned countries, you can use the type element in each placeDetail element as a filter. "Country" is used to describe places that are countries or dependents of countries (like Puerto Rico).

If you want to determine the country for each matched location, you will need to use our GeoPlanet web service, which can return information about a named place. You can pass a WOEID to the GeoPlanet place resource and it will return its name, centroid, bounding box, and containing administrative areas. If you only want information about the country containing the named place, you can use the belongtos resource to return information about the country. For example, if Placemaker returns a placeDetail element with a WOEID of 2502265 (Sunnyvale, CA, US), you could use the following GeoPlanet request to learn that Sunnyvale is in the state of California, and the country of United States:

CODE

http://where.yahooapis.com/v1/place/2502265?appid=yourappid

Use your own application id

You could use the following GeoPlanet request to learn the WOEID and name of the country containing Sunnyvale:

CODE

http://where.yahooapis.com/v1/place/2502265/belongtos.type(country)?appid=yourappid

Use your own application id

You can use the "view=long" parameter to get centroid and bounding box information about the country.

If you want to determine the single country that includes the most matched locations in the text, you should look at the administrativeScope element. If the type element is not a country, you can use the above method for determining the country containing the place.

It would be nice to know what you are using Placemaker to accomplish.
It looks like you may not be calling Placemaker correctly. "New York, NY" has only 12 characters, yet the response indicates you passed 18 characters. Your quote from Jules Verne has 220 characters, yet the response indicates you passed 310 characters. It would be helpful if you can provide a way to replicate your results. Have you created an application, or are you using an application created by someone else? I was able to get good results for most of your query strings using Christian Heilmann's Placemaker application at http://icant.co.uk/geomaker/. Placemaker didn't do well on the list of places from Jules Verne, missing Brindisi and finding Liverpool in New York instead of Liverpool and New York City.

Eddie Babcock
Yahoo!

One of the ways we decide what terms to return is to assign probabilities to each word in the query. Words like "Nic" and "Vegas" have a probability of matching a place name. Words like "to" and "in" boost the probability of any potential place names that follow them. When the adjusted probability for a place name is above a threshold, we return it. In your first example, the base probability that "Nic" is a place name is about 37%. When "due to" and "infamous" surround this term, the probability rises to 47% and gets returned. The confidence of 9 returned indicates that there is only one possible place that this term could refer to. In your second example, the base probability that "Vegas" is a place name is only 20%, compared to the base probability of 90% that "Las Vegas" is a place name.

We will look into these improving the results for these examples in a future Placemaker release. I'm glad that Placemaker has met or exceeded your expectations. If your application is publicly available, post a link and description on our demos and applications forum.

Eddie Babcock
Yahoo! Would you like to see these places added to a future release of Placemaker? If so, you may suggest places to be added by posting a reply on the GeoPlanet Enhancements Requests Missing and new places topic. All suggestions will be reviewed for inclusion in our named place repository that is used by both Placemaker and GeoPlanet.

What we are looking for is source material that describes the place mentioned. For each place we need to know the following information:

Place name (e.g. Chinatown)
Place type (e.g. Neighborhood)
Location (coordinates or containing place)
URL that mentions the place name in context (optional)

If you know of a source that contains multiple places, you don't need to provide information about every place; the URL will be sufficient.

Please go here: http://www.transpomans.com/yplaces/ and type, say, "Vladivostok" (town name) into the edit box on your left. Then select most granular object in the list below (that'll be Vladivostok in this case) and hit "Belongs" button. It'll display a number of WOEIDs Vladivostok belongs to; for every WOEID which falls completely within one time zone there will be an object of type Time Zone, for this example it'll be Asia/Vladivostok. Identical approach applies for any other example (try "90210" or "125 Shaftesbury Ave London UK WC2H 8AD" or anything else).

Hi,
Would you please change the Flash policy file to allow Flex / Flash applications to access this API. All it needs is to change http://wherein.yahooapis.com/crossdomain.xml to be similar to crossdomain.xml in Flickr (http://api.flickr.com/crossdomain.xml) or Yahoo Map (http://local.yahooapis.com/crossdomain.xml). The current crossdomain.xml on PlaceMaker only allow Flash hosted on Yahoo servers to access the API.

This is a great product. People were talking about PlaceMaker in WhereCamp on Saturday. I immediately want to try hacking up something. I saw there is no Actionscript library yet. Then I said, no problem, I can create one. However, I was quite bummed when I found out that the policy file only allow Yahoo hosted Flash to access the API.

Thank you,

You can get JSON output if you call Placemaker through YQL. Here is a link to describe the "geo.placemaker" data table: http://developer.yahoo.com/yql/console/?q=...2Falltables.env

I'm going to open a separate thread about getting support for JSON as documentType though (i.e. input).

-md

Welcome to the Product Announcements Forum

Welcome to the Product Announcements Forum for Yahoo! Placemaker. This is the place to learn about updated releases and new features added to Placemaker.

Placemaker is a web service that provides developers the means to geo-enrich their structured and unstructured web content, such as web pages, RSS (and Atom) feeds, news articles, blog posts, and status updates. As an open API, Placemaker helps developers make their applications more location-aware. Placemaker is not a geocoder, but rather a geo-enrichment service to determine the 'whereness' of web content.

Placemaker is a versioned web service, which means that you must specify which version of the web service you are using in every request. Backward-compatible changes, such as new resources, supported formats, or elements will not change the version number. Backward-incompatible changes, such as resource name changes or deleted required elements will change the version number. We try to minimize the number of versions by making mostly backward-compatible changes, and consolidating backward-incompatible changes in a single release.
